Clinical echocardiography is an ultrasound-based test that shows the heart beating in real time to assess its structure and function. It is a core, noninvasive tool in cardiology used to diagnose and monitor many heart diseases.
What it is
Clinical echocardiography uses high‑frequency sound waves (ultrasound) to create moving images of the heart, called echocardiograms.
Because it does not use radiation and is performed externally with a probe on the chest in most cases, it is considered a safe, routine test.
What it shows
It can show the size and thickness of the heart chambers, how well the heart pumps, and how the valves open and close.
Clinicians use it to detect or follow conditions such as heart failure, valve disease, congenital heart defects, pericardial effusion, blood clots, and damage after a heart attack.
